When her short story The Lottery was first published in the New Yorker in 1948, readers were so horrified they sent her hate mail; it has since become one of the most iconic American stories of all time. In addition to her dark, brilliant novels, she wrote lightly fictionalized magazine pieces about family life with her four children and her husband, the critic Stanley Edgar Hyman. Shirley Jackson died in 1965.

Leider ist das Buch gar nicht das, was ich erwartet hatte. Von Spannung kann gar keine Rede sein und die Kapitel ziehen sich durch sinnlose und oberflächliche Dialoge leider dermaßen in die Länge. Kann mich leider nicht dazu bringen, das Buch zu Ende zu lesen. Gähn.

Unknown to me until someone told me about it - and I read it without a break more or less... readable and enjoyable, but the beginning and the end did not quite make sense to me - the finale was not as dramatic as I had hoped, although she does keep you guessing to the very last page. Overall, I love the writing and "wanted more"...

From the blurb I would have expected a nice horror/ghost story, which wasn't what I got. Instead, The Haunting of Hill House provides a character study of how people behave under certain circumstances. I'll rate it 10.For my detailed review, click on the link in my bio :)

I decided to read the book after watching the Netflix series. There are only few similarities (the haunted house and the names of some of the protagonists). I found it an interesting lecture nonetheless because of the author's style, but I've read far scarier books, and the series allows to connect with the protagonists more deeply.

While this book might have been pure terror to 1950s readers, to a 2018 reader it is hardly more scary than a Tim Burton movie. Still a nice read

This book is truly a haunting read. The characters are tangibly real, and the writing is captivating. The sense of sinister foreboding that runs like a golden thread through the book kept me up at night. You don't dread annihilation, monsters or even darkness, but fear itself, which is very powerful.

Where to start? This sequel just made the whole series so much better. This is definitely a contender for my favorite series I read this year.I wish all my history lessons would have been written like this. This book reads like a fun fantasy story but it is a total historic fiction, it seems very well researched and I learn so much about the era and the Ottoman empire. Thank you Kiersten for teaching me a thin or two about that time and place.It is incredible how a gay/lesbian story arc is woven into that time period, makes total sense and doesnt feel preachery or pushed/fake. Well done!I enjoyed how the characters develoed so much. Especially Radu, who only felt like the whiney sidekick in the first book became one of my favorite story arcs. I could read about him and Nazira for hours, following them has turned into my favorite part.

I liked the first book, but I seriously LOVE this one. Why? Well, the characters are more developed, the world building is even more amazing and after starting the first chapter I was unable to stop reading. I was pulled into the history of Lada and Radu, and seeing how everything unfurled was so great. I hold my breath every time Lada attacked a village, trying to take what was rightfully hers. I was sad for Radu, every time he laid eyes on .... I was simply involved in the story and I highly recommend the book to everyone. This series is so worth giving a try! I chose to read this book and all opinions in this review are my own and completely unbiased. Thanks to NetGalley and Penguin Random House UK!

Don't get me wrong. The book seems to be great. I haven't read it all now but I like what I have read already.The physical quality of the book though is terrible. The cover is made of very thin carton. And the layout is even worse. It appears as if someone just coppied the text from a PDF and put it into a book. Often times they even forgot to delete the page numbers from the original text and so they appear within 45 46 the text. I cannot believe, someone actually dares to be so lazy and still makes money with it.

It was an easy read but I didn't learn anything new from it.Most of the numerous rules of how to manage money are just common sense. There are some that do not apply to people living outside of the USA and some that I already read in other books. I honestly don't remember any rule that I never heard before or that it would trigger that AHA moment. Most of the rules are how to save the money which is something I have been taught from early days from my parents. But I guess for someone who did not have that, he might actually benefit from the book.
